About the role

This role will be focussed on delivering critical projects that sit at the heart of our architecture, impacting our full suite of products. Requiring both high-level architectural planning and more focussed development tasks, with a high degree of responsibility and tremendous scope for progression, whilst using your experience and industry knowledge to improve our products and services over time, ensuring that they remain best in class. 

The technical focus will be predominantly back-end Python development, but understanding across the full stack would be highly beneficial.

About you
  • Very proficient in backend programming languages (we use primarily Python, but if you are proficient with Ruby, Go or PHP, you will be able to get up to speed quickly enough, Shell-scripting is an advantage). Good understanding of how this fits within a wider context and some ability to work within adjacent technologies.

  • Knowledge of Docker and serverless technologies.

  • Willingness and aptitude for keeping your technical knowledge up-to-date.

  • Able to act as lead/architect on complex, wide-ranging tasks.

  •  Willingness to accept responsibility for key projects or core system development.

  • Ability to imagine and plan solutions that would work in the widest, most reusable, elegant, economical, and most resilient way.

  • Initiative and responsibility to seek to ‘own’ tasks, processes, systems that need work.

  • Able to plan, spec and advise on development complexity and timescales.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead development tasks and projects aimed at improving the various frameworks, tools, and platforms that serve our websites and similar applications. 

  • Act as backend lead and advisor for complex backend development of website and product features and enhancements.

  • Collaborating with the infrastructure and product teams to modernise the technologies that underpin and serve many thousands of websites effectively.

  • Write and maintain high quality code that connects our individual products with each other and external systems with reliability, maintainability and security in mind.

  • Help continuously modernise our code and applications to support the most modern, scalable and economical infrastructure. 

  • Produce solutions to complex architectural problems, optimising performance and interoperability with the underlying infrastructure in mind.

  • Work on improving our core code architecture, aiming towards a more modern, scalable, modular approach - at a pace that is appropriate and considers our current clientbase and product suite. 

  • Take part in rotatriage during working hours to check for issues reported by the rest of the team to help make sure that they are dealt with in a timely manner.

  • Maintain a high-level familiarity with our products and have an understanding of our goals as a business.

  • Solving bugs and website or infrastructure issues

  • Researching, developing and integrating new ideas, techniques, methods and technologies that will elevate our products

Our London office is based within a converted warehouse complex shared with a handful of other friendly creative organisations and a top-notch canteen.
