About the role

We are looking for a front-end web developer with a strong understanding of design and user interfaces to join our talented team. You will be tasked with implementing custom designs on top of our website platform - predominantly using CSS to restyle existing templates, but also using JavaScript and back-end languages where necessary. The ideal candidate will have a fantastic eye for detail and the ability to reproduce front-end designs precisely, making sensible choices about responsive design and user experience. There will also be the opportunity to work in some back end languages and potentially be able to hone your ability to become a more full stack developer over time.

Working in a sub-team alongside our project managers, designers and client support/account specialists, you will deliver projects of consistent quality and pace. This is a fantastic opportunity to progress your career within an industry-leading design and development team building the best websites in the art world.

About you

  • Basic programming fundamentals in any front-end or back-end language

  • Proven, demonstrable experience working on previous real-world websites or applications

  • A keen eye for detail, intuitive user experience and an appreciation for good website design

  • Familiarity with common web standards and issues such as page speed, code legibility reusability, accessibility, security, SEO

  • Excellent time management and prioritisation

  • Excellent communication skills

  • The ability to embrace new working practices and methodology

  • Problem solving ability with analytical and abstract reasoning skills

The below are highly beneficial, but not essential:

  • Knowledge of one or more backend programming languages such as Python, Ruby or PHP, combined with some basic knowledge of MySQL.

  • Experience in website or interface design

  • A good eye for typography

Key responsibilities
  • Turning website designs in the finished article, and delivering projects on time and at a high standard

  • Building a comprehensive knowledge of our website CMS settings and modules, and using this in the development process

  • Using HTML, CSS and JavaScript to customise the look and feel of pre-made pages and layouts, meticulously matching designs

  • Reading and understanding templates, databases and interfaces using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, Python and SQL

  • Helping research and develop new ideas, techniques, methods and technologies as required and helping us to improve our products and the project delivery process

  • Helping to shape our website platform product by recommending or building features to make the customisation process faster and more seamless

  • We have a large client-liaison team but sometimes you will need to be client-facing as this is sometimes the shortest route to the best result. You may also have technical knowledge that helps to interpret what a client is explaining.
